Eligibility Criteria for UGC NET 2026

1. Educational Qualification

* General/Unreserved/EWS: Must have secured at least 55% marks (without rounding off) in a Master’s Degree or equivalent from recognized universities.

* OBC (NCL)/SC/ST/PwD/Third Gender: Candidates from these reserved categories require a minimum of 50% marks in their Master’s Degree.

* Final Year Students: If you are currently pursuing your Master’s or awaiting results, you can apply provisionally. However, you must complete your degree within two years of the NET result with the required percentage.

2. Age Limit & Relaxation

* JRF: The upper age limit is 30 years.

* Assistant Professor: There is no upper age limit for applying for the post of Assistant Professor.

Age Relaxations for JRF:

* SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD/Women/Third Gender: 5 years relaxation (up to 35 years).

* LLM Degree Holders: 3 years relaxation.

* Armed Forces Personnel: Up to 5 years (subject to length of service).

Reservation Policy (SC, ST, OBC, and others)

The NTA follows the Government of India’s reservation policy for seats in Central Universities and Institutions.

* General Category: 40% aggregate marks in both papers.

Note: Scoring the minimum marks only makes you eligible for the merit list. The final cut-off is determined by the top 6% of the appearing candidates who qualify for Assistant Professor, with a smaller subset qualifying for JRF.

* For Qualifying the Exam: There is no interview conducted by NTA to qualify for UGC NET or JRF. Your result is based solely on your performance in the CBT.
